[COHO] COCC Beer Class - We're On!

Greetings CO Brewers!

I am a new enthusiast who recently joined the 'list.' I have yet to brew a single batch yet, but I am eager to get started. Normally I'm the type who does a lot of research before taking on a new hobby, and I often join lists and and almost always lurk for a good long while before surfacing. But this time, I feel compelled to post because I love education, both teaching and learning.

So from a selfish perspective I want to attend the classes to learn, but from a selfless point of veiw, I want to volunteer! I'm thinking that I'm qualified for grunt work, but I'm also a computer tech, so I can setup, transport, I can even speak, but I don't think I'd have much to offer on the topic.

I'm looking forward to the next meeting where I can meet everyone, and start learning more. I am currently eyeing a full grain, 3-keg system for sale (I think I'll skip the extract step, and possibly even the bottling routine, but I'm open to suggestions and feedback). I have recently read Dave Miller's Homebrewing Guide and John Palmer's How to Brew, and several other sites. I am also interested in growing my own ingredients, at least the hops, but I realize this is tough country for gardens, as a rule.

The bottom line is that this is my bid for volunteering with the COCC class, if you need any help.

Cheers, Bill

Bill,
If you need a “back stage” assistant…perhaps someone to monitor the boil while you preach to the class…or whatever, let me know…we can discuss at our BIGFOOT ALE BREW this Sunday.

The COCC Beer Brewing Class is a go! We (COHO) got some press in the Source when they interviewed me about the class ( I have not read it yet). So far the class is 50% - 50%, male / female so that is a good thing. I wish Michelle was still here to give her presentation on Women and Brewing in History and Today. If any of our female brewers would like to step in and give a 15 - 20 minute presentation please let me know. So far the class is small with only 10 students, but that is expected to grow over the weekend as the people who have expressed an interest commit.

Our own Brett and Evan will be two of the presenters. They will be talking on some specialty topics specific to grains, yeast and fermentation. I have a chemist, Doug Elliott slipping in the first class. Tyler West and Evan of Silver Moon fame will also be presenters. I'll post a schedule of all the guest presenters talks and subjects in the next day or so. If anyone wants to drop in for a recap or remedial training on one of these subjects you are welcome to sit down with us and share your experiences.

The classes are: 01-29-08, 02-05-08, 02-12-08 (all Tuesdays) @ 7:00 PM and 02-20-08 @ 6:00PM (Wed) which is a brewery tour followed by a COHO meeting.

The college is open to a Part II, all grain brewing. That may be next semester.

More to follow................
