[COHO] Oregon State Fair Homebrew Competition

Given that we ARE the Deschutes County's ONLY official homebrew club, we
should play a greater part in the judging at the Deschutes County Fair in my
oppinion. This would also give our club members a chance to learn some
judging skills, even if we don't have an "official" BJCP judge here. I think
there are enough experienced members in our club to guide those that
volunteer to judge to at least do a better job than last years judging...as
I recall, the APA judging event at Bretts went pretty well...?
Anyone know who we need to contact to volunteer for the homebrew judging?

I'd agree that "boycott" probably isn't the appropriate term to use here.
Personally I can't imagine entering beers into a competition where there are
no guidelines to judge by. The impression I was given from last year was
that it was a "this beer tastes better than the rest" type of judging, of
which our own Paul (Stache) did very well with. I recall someone (Bill?)
whose IPA came back as "too hoppy." That was all the feedback that he was
given. Even first time judges at a BJCP sanctioned event give more feedback
than that.

I'm not so sure that we were planning on boycotting the event as a club.
It's more that we weren't crazy about the structure of the competition last
year so, if we were going to participate this year, we wanted to take a more
proactive approach and participate in the judging. Same with the LaPine
Frontier Days event. We were thinking that by doing this we would get better
feedback about our beers while obtaining experience that would be useful if
we wanted to host a competition ourselves. It might be a bit late but, does
anyone want to look into how we can contact the judges and see what we can
do to help them?
By the way, the winner of the State Fair competition last year was gloating
the whole time at HopMadness. Now, we don't want that to happen again, do
we?

Just to clarify, this is the Oregon STATE Fair, not the Deschutes County
Fair...though I think they are happening pretty much at the same time.
Apparently there is an unofficial club strike on the Deschutes Co. Fair
after last years judging developed some barnyard smells. ;)
OOPS, I thought that this was the county fair...bummer. Offer withdrawn,
sorry.
I'll still do the Deschutes Fair, I like to support local events and
boycotts often only end up hurting individuals (although I understand the
issues).
Thanks!
