I like Panasonic, they work fine as usb mass storage compliant
devices, and their ptp support is in gphoto2 if you want to go that
route.
And as cameras go they are very good, top-quality lenses and optical
image stabilisation (compensates for camera shake) are standard
features across the whole line.
The only downside is they are a bit slow, but that's true of most any
camera in <$500 range
The place to go for reviews is http://dpreview.com/
they have a fairly complete list of current cameras and they review tough.
There are a lot of variables in a camera choice, if this is a first
camera and you're mostly going to be taking portrait and landscape
photos, then a recent point and shoot should work fine, but if you're
doing hard-core birding or sports photography, you'll want a camera
that can handle those tasks a Nikon or a Canon.
My suggestion is start by reading this review
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panasonicfx01/
and then look at a bunch of others,
and try out cameras at the store before you buy.
