[Bendug] Bored

Ah, boredom. No better inspiration for starting new projects. I've never
been too impressed with php myself, though it might grow into a truly robust
programming language in a few years.
Me, I'm still working on learning Java. I finally have my brain more or
less wrapped around the OOP thing, but I'm still doing more reading than
programming. I'm into the fun stuff now, getting a good view of all the
neat stuff you can do and how, then I can sit down and plan out a baby
program (bouncing balls or something), then write it and spend a week or two
figuring out where I went wrong... I'm a big believer in learning from my
mistakes, so I have to make a lot of them... I'm also studying Braille for
real now (5 lines an hour. Yay, me.), so I have to alternate my study time.
I know there are blind programmers out there, but I haven't made contact
with them yet to find out how they do it or even how blind they are. I'm
getting an unhappy feeling that it just takes them three or four times as
long to do everything. Ah, well. Might as well give it a shot, eh?
When I start to get lazy on my studies, I remember that I need to get Java
down so I can move onto Perl and Ruby so I can at least have an intelligent
discussion with you guys about what you're doing. I'm just familiar enough
with Perl to sort of see what you've done in Ruby if I really work at it.
Got busy with clients, and I don't want to risk screwing up my working
computer while I have active projects going, so I haven't done the dual boot
with Linux yet. Just in case, you know. One of the problems with the
machine I'm running Linux on now is that it's got a 15-inch CRT monitor, and
I just can't see well enough to read on it. My "real" computer has a
top-of-the line (a year ago) high res LCD, so I can still do everything on
it without pain and strife. So I'm really good at Patience, since I use it
to train my brain to make decisions based on incomplete visual input (it
does seem to help), and I've done a few simple things like multiple desktops
and setting path variables (woo hoo!). But I won't be really getting into
the good stuff like shell scripts and whatnot for a few weeks still.
So sorry I haven't been very active. When I finally get my stuff together,
you can be sure I'll be bragging about every simple accomplishment while I
move through the baby steps. And, of course, crying and squalling when
things don't go the way I want them to. The mistakes thing again. Just
think how all-knowing and superior you'll get to feel! ;)
Take care!

I'm really bored with the Drupal site now. It never impressed me much in
flexability (I always liked the way Scoop was totally flexable).
The wiki is starting to piss me off now too. I was all freeking excited
about coWiki before and now that I had to back it up and recreate it, it
freaks out about editing certain things. Bleh. I am also finding it really
hard to troubleshoot because it is PHP... When my Ruby code doesn't quite
work out, I can go to a command line or IRB and see exactly what's up. I
can not find a similarly powerful method for PHP. I guess I could recompile
with debug (I've gone so far before) but I'm just not really thrilled with
PHP anymore.
I'm going to shop around for another solution with integrated newslogging
and wiki. Seeing as how Paul and I are the only ones who seem to really be
using the bendug stuff, I'm thinking something in Ruby (Rails maybe) is in
order...
more to come...
