Thanks to everyone who replied to my large wav editing
question.

Audacity is exactly what I was looking for, I had no
idea such a program existed for nix. It easily loaded
and manipulated my 1GB wav on a PIII/1GHz with 512k
RAM and a mostly free 20 GB hdd.  

I used to use a similar program for Win32 years ago.
Sound Forge or Sonic Forge or something like that. 

Speaking of Win32, shame on those of you who suggested
I use Windows tools, you should know better than that.
