Sounds more like a screwy DSL modem than anything...if you're sure it's the modem.  Are you using ipchains for anything?  Is the modem doing (or not doing) something else that tells you it has died?  Also what kind of DSL modem with what kind of service?  Also, how is it set up?  Is it acting as a router, or is it in bridge mode with your PC as the demarc?
